FAQ: What’s in your bag?

Time for another FAQ. I received a couple of emails this week about EXIF data, what settings I use, etc. Since I don’t always have time to respond to every email, I wanted to post a quick reference to it here because I have addressed it before. If you check out THIS FAQ post, I chat briefly about EXIF data and share my favorite EXIF viewer. (If you are using Firefox you can see EXIF data using your browser.) This new blog will allow you to right-click on the photos and gain access to their properties where you can use the URL of the photo to view the EXIF info.

As far as “What’s in your bag?”….I am a Canon girl 150%. My brother uses Nikon, so I won’t knock it…and I admit I don’t know much about it. But, I started with Canon and I’ll use it until the day I die (you can quote me on that). One thing I’m commited to doing early on is only purchasing equipment I know I will use often enough to be worth actually owning. So for that reason I often rent pieces to try them out before I buy. As a result, what I own are as follows:

Canon 5D – Primary – LOVE it, LOVE it, LOVE it, but hate that it doesn’t have a self cleaning sensor. Eventually I may buy the Mark II – which does.
Canon 40D -I hang onto this as my backup. And, it’s a great camera, fast and is fabulous for little ones.
Canon 50mm f/1.4 – My all-time favorite lens. Crystal clear, and a great focal length. I always seem to come back to it no matter what else I dabble with.
Canon 85mm f/1.8 – I’ve been using this one quite a bit the last two weeks. I almost sold it awhile back, but decided to commit to spending more time with it…and I’m glad I did. It’s fabulously sharp and gives me a nice tight shot, especially with kids – who don’t love you in their faces.
Canon 24-70 f/2.8L – Another fabulous lens. This is the most versatile lens I’ve used. If I’m using my camera for personal use; vacations, walk-about, etc…this is the one attached to my camera and constantly at my hip. And, I shoot all of my landscapes with it.

Currently, this gear is living in a Large Jill-E rolling Camera Bag. I did love it at first, but admit that the bag is HUGE, bulky and still doesn’t efficiently store all of my equipment. Plus, it’s a b*&ch to travel with and doesn’t fit well in the overhead bins!:(  Instead of hauling that with me to a shoot whether it be commercial, weddings, families, etc – I ALWAYS wear my Shootsac and leave my massive bag at home. If you aren’t familiar with shootsac, developed by the amazingly talented Jessica Claire - check them out! I went back and forth about buying one for ages, and then ended up winning one through a contest hosted by Jessica & PIF photo. Let me tell you I don’t know how I lived without it, or why I wavered on the purchase! I just throw everything I need inside and take off.  GET ONE!

I hope this information is useful!

I do love this new blog of yours, sista! It’s flippin’ sweet :)
And the 85…I’m thinking of getting one of those to add to my bag.
I’m currently renting the Nikon 14-24 (oh yes, I shoot with a Nikon, but I still love you even though you’re a Canon gal) and I’m actually not a fan! Who would’ve thought I’d love my cheapie 50mm over a $1700US lens! Maybe I should spend my money on an 85. Anyway, enough of tangents. Keep up the amazing work, you are awesome~
